- Abstract:
- This report describes two instruments which have been developed for
dust diagnostics. The first is a streak xray camera capable of recording
time resolved dust density profiles. The camera uses a soft xray source
and an intensified film sheet mounted on a rotatiing plate. The exposure
of the film is proportional to the xray attenuation by the lofted dust,
and a microdensitometer is used to measure the film density. The use of
a calibration technique allows quantitative reading of the dust density
directly off the film. The second instrument is a
Double-Exposure-Cine-Flash Microscope. The instrument records dark field
stop action cine photomicrographs of duct passing through the focal
plane of a conventional optical microscope, for the purposes of
determining particle size distributions, particle densities and particle
velocities as a function of time. The 16mm cine camera runs at 333
frames per second and uses a 400 foot roll of 7250 high speed color
film. Dust particles are actively illuminated by focusing the arcs of
two internal EG&G 5M-3 flash lamps onto the 0.8 x 1. Omm wide by
0.1mm volume recorded by the microscope. Each flash is about 1/2
microseconds in duration. One lamp is fired three microseconds after the
other to show the second position of a particle. The instrument package
also includes a static pressure gauge and a back scattering
nephelometer.
