Abstract:
(U) THIS PAPER DISCUSSES MONOCULAR PASSIVE RANGING TECHNIQUES BASED ON DIFFERENTIAL ABSORPTION OF RADIATION BY THE INTERVENING ATMOSPHERE BETWEEN AN EMITTING/REFLECTIVE TARGET AND THE SENSOR. THE AUTHORS CITE THE FACT THAT A SINGLE AUTONOMOUS OBSERVER AVOIDS THE LOGISTICS OF COORDINATING MULTIPLE SENSORS REQUIRED FOR TRIANGULATION, AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT ACTIVE METHODS MAY NOT BE FEASIBLE FOR VARIOUS REASONS: STEALTH, EYE SAFETY, ILLUMINATION CONSTRAINTS, AND DESIGN LIMITATIONS (ENERGY, WEIGHT, VOLUME, COST, AND RELIABILITY). THE AUTHORS ALLEGE THAT THE TECHNIQUES DISCUSSED IN THE PAPER COULD BE APPLIED TO ANY TARGET WITH SUFFICIENT RADIATION (EXPLOSIONS, PLUMES, HARDBODIES). THE PAPER FOCUSES ON DEVELOPING THE TECHNIQUE FOR USE ON THE HALO-II AIRCRAFT.
