Founded in 1956 by three MIT graduates, Foster-Miller, Inc. (FMI) is one of the largest technology and innovation companies in the world. The company started as an independent, privately held engineering firm with the goal of developing proprietary and practical answers to technical challenges-something that was missing in the marketplace. Over the years, Foster-Miller evolved into a company of over 360 people, including 265 mechanical, electrical, biomedical, thermal, chemical, nuclear, aerospace, software and materials engineers, as well as physicists, mathematicians, chemists, and biologists.

Foster-Miller's staff takes a multidisciplinary approach to convert medical device market needs and ideas into proprietary innovations that establish market leadership. The company exists to solve technical problems by developing proprietary products, systems, processes and a range of specialized services resulting in competitive advantage for its clients. Foster-Miller's core capabilities include product design, production equipment, analysis, simulation, process systems development, systems integration, advanced materials development, and instrumentation and controls development.

Foster-Miller's large team of engineering experts has worked with transdermals, drug delivery devices, angioplasty catheters, surgical lasers, endoscopes, automated pharmaceutical laboratory development, syringes, and many other devices. In addition, the team has the ability to create efficient manufacturing solutions, either by updating existing equipment or by developing entirely new and proprietary manufacturing systems. Products developed using these manufacturing systems include a one-handed biopsy tool, an adjustable insulin injection pen, a low-cost endoscope, disposable test kits, and a sleep apnea mask.

Foster-Miller was recently acquired by QinetiQ, (pronounced "kinetic"), a 10,000-employee British company, with a long history of pioneering research and development. The merger is the beginning of a rapid expansion into the North American market for QinetiQ. The combination of engineering resources available within these two well-established companies forms the world's largest equipment, process, and new product solutions provider with an unmatched pool of expertise and multiple global facilities.

Foster-Miller is headquartered in Waltham, MA off of Route 128, known as "America's Technology Highway," and has offices in Washington, DC and Albany, NY. The company was named one of the most innovative businesses in America by Inc. magazine in August 2002.

Foster-Miller is unique in that its standard contractual terms transfer proprietary rights to inventions paid for by its clients to those clients. The Company is proud if its record of establishing market-leading proprietary products for its clients.
